Faster trim() in JavaScript

In the dark shadows and back corridors of this world, there exist a strange, but marvelous people. They do things most of us would never do and that all of us can profit from - like removing road-kill from a busy neighborhood street, or optimizing the hell out of the world's most boring, but very commonly used JavaScript prototype function.
