APIs

Jena Semantic Web Framework
A Java framework for building Semantic Web applications. It provides a programmatic environment for RDF, RDFS and OWL, SPARQL and includes a rule-based inference engine. Jena is open source and grown out of work with the HP Labs Semantic Web Programme.

OWL API
The OWL API is a Java interface and implementation for the W3C Web Ontology Language OWL. Unlike Jena, this API deals with OWL only and does not mix alot of RDF constructs. This API is structured in a way that can teach you a lot about OWL by using it.

KEA
KEA is an algorithm for extracting keyphrases from text documents. It can be either used for free indexing or for indexing with a controlled vocabulary.

Weka 3:
Data Mining Software in Java; Weka is a collection of machine learning algorithms for data mining tasks. The algorithms can either be applied directly to a dataset or called from your own Java code. Weka contains tools for data pre-processing, classification, regression, clustering, association rules, and visualization. It is also well-suited for developing new machine learning schemes. Weka is open source software issued under the GNU General Public License.

Blogs

  • About the social semantic web
  • Blog of a Boston-based IT Consultant - frequently posts interesting commentary on the Semantic Web
  • Geospatial Semantic Web Blog - On the cross-fertilization of geospatial and semantic web technology
  • Raw, - "Following the Web to its Full Potential"
  • Semantic DataBase - "Semantic Database realizes the Semantic Web vision of Sir Tim Berner Lee. This space will hold the thoughts and ideas that comes to me while talking to different people who are interested in this topic. Semantic DB is an attempt to create a Database(knowledge base) where each data elements are related to every other elements based on meaning. I am Still working on it. If you are reading this then pls feel free to write your comment on the posts you are reading."
  • Semantic Focus - Semantic Focus is a blog and community that centers around the topic of the Semantic Web and anything to do with it. This community was created to focus the effort of reaching the Semantic Web as well as serve as the best reference for anyone who wants learn more about it.
  • Thinking Space - This is a blog about innovative ideas on World Wide Web and web evolution. In particular, now the discussions focus on Semantic Web, Web 2.0, and predictions of the next-stage web.

Wikis

  • ESW Wiki - The W3C has a formal track for making standards specs. The specs answer a lot of questions, but not all of them. This wiki is for connecting the people who make the specs with the people who build on them.

Communities and projects

  • Knowledge Web (KW) - (KW) is a 4 year Network of Excellence project funded by the European Commission 6th Framework Programme. Knowledge Web began on January 1st, 2004. Supporting the transition process of Ontology technology from Academia to Industry is the main and major goal of Knowledge Web. The mission of KnowledgeWeb is to strengthen the European industry and service providers in one of the most important areas of current computer technology: Semantic Web enabled E-work and E-commerce. The project concentrates its efforts around the outreach of this technology to industry. Naturally, this includes education and research efforts to ensure the durability of impact and support of industry.
  • Reasoning on the Web with Rules and Semantics (REWERSE) - REWERSE is a research "Network of Excellence" (NoE) on "Reasoning on the Web" that is funded by the EU Commission and Switzerland within the "6th Framework Programme" (FP6), Information Society Technologies (IST), Priority 2 under the project reference number 506779. REWERSE addresses the IST strategic action line "Semantic-based knowledge systems".
  • SemanticDesktop.org
  • Semantic Focus - Semantic Focus is a blog and community that centers around the topic of the Semantic Web and anything to do with it. This community was created to focus the effort of reaching the Semantic Web as well as serve as the best reference for anyone who wants learn more about it.

Companies

  • Cerebra (now webMethods) - Cerebra is a pioneer and recognized market leader in the use of standards-based, semantic technology for metadata management. Cerebra's solution automates the integration and organization of IT metadata from any source.
  • Franz, Inc. - "Franz Inc. offers Allegro CL with AllegroCache that together provide an ideal environment to create complex, mission-critical applications that solve real world problems very quickly. Allegro CL's 64 or 32 bit solutions with Persistent A.I. built-in, all the way down, will set your application apart from the competition."
  • SchemaLogic - Business Semantics Management
  • Semantic Arts - enterprise architecture development and application integration
  • Talis - "an innovative technology company expert at managing semantically rich metadata and in delivering software and services for information management."

Semantic Web Search Engines

  • Sindice - the Semantic Web Index
Over 10 billion pieces of reusable information can already be found across 100 million web pages which embed RDF and Microformats. Start consuming this data today with Sindice Data Web services.
    • The Sindice Map of Data lists sites that export their information via Microformats and embedded RDF (and lists the format(s) the sites are using).

Tools

Ontology authoring tools

  • Altova SemanticWorks - a visual RDF/OWL editor that lets you visually design Semantic Web instance documents, vocabularies, and ontologies, then output them in either RDF/XML or N-Triples format.
  • Protégé Ontology Editor and Knowledge Acquisition System - a free, open source ontology editor and knowledge-base framework. The Protégé platform supports two main ways of modeling ontologies via the Protégé-Frames and Protégé-OWL editors. Protégé ontologies can be exported into a variety of formats including RDF(S), OWL, and XML Schema. Protégé is based on Java, is extensible, and provides a plug-and-play environment that makes it a flexible base for rapid prototyping and application development.
  • TopBraid Composer - an enterprise-class platform for developing Semantic Web ontologies and building semantic applications. Fully compliant with W3C standards, Composer offers comprehensive support for developing, managing and testing configurations of knowledge models and their instance knowledge bases. Composer provides a flexible and extensible framework with a published API for developing semantic client/server or browser-based solutions, that can integrate disparate applications and data sources.
